When illusions of three-dimensional, rounded forms started appearing in my paintings several years ago, I was curious to see what one might look like in real space. So I made this cylindrical drawing (photographed from 3 angles), which helped me visualize the space between the front and back of that type of form. I did some sketches from it, but soon realized that it was more interesting as an object in itself than as a tool to make paintings or drawings from. It’s still on a shelf in my studio, and I like seeing it out of the corner of my eye as I paint, working with an accumulation of color and mark to develop related structures. -Rachael Wren, 2012
