My main work is psychological portrait paintings. But every once in a while the history of portraiture starts to feel like painful baggage to me, rather than an interesting challenge, and instead of feeling excited by that painting history, I start feeling anxious and confused. Painting flowers is great fun, because they are kind of like stand-ins for heads, but don’t carry the overt psychology of human subjects. They are also extremely beautiful and sensual, but can feel slightly creepy and translucent and fleshy and rotting. -Jenny Dubnau, 2012
