Working on paper is a way for me to quickly find new images and ideas. It’s also a great way to generate a separate and fully realized body of work apart from my paintings on canvas. I enjoy the texture and fragility of the cold press paper, the intimacy of scale, and rigidity of the drawing board. I also leave wide and clean margins to convey a sense of compression and clearly defined space. These aspects compliment the body, resilience, permanence, objecthood, and expanse of canvas. Generally, the canvas has a lot to learn from the paper, and vice versa. -Nate Ethier, 2012
